Out of Social Media Ideas? 7 Tips for Content Inspiration!

Alyson Scott • Oct 18, 2021

Feel like you’re running out of social media ideas? Constantly creating content can feel like a monumental feat – and at some point, we all struggle for ideas.

If you are staring down a blank page waiting for things to happen, we’ve got the inspiration you need to get ideas flowing.

1. Start with a plan.

Sometimes a little structure can help boost creativity. Rather than sitting down expecting genius to happen, create a process and break your job into microtasks. One tiny step at a time will lead to results. Aim for progress over perfection.

  • Start with your goals, brand voice, and ideal client
  • Craft a process – brainstorm ideas, create graphics, write your captions
  • Create templates for images and graphics
  • Use customizable templates for captions

2. Ask questions!

Get into the mindset of your ideal clients and jot down any questions they may have related to your industry. Crafting quick answers is a great way to post helpful information.

  • What problems do they have that you can solve?
  • Are there questions clients often ask you?
  • Are there any exciting or shocking stats/info you can share?
  • Do they have any misconceptions about your industry as a whole?
  • Are there myths you can bust?

3. Set a timer & brainstorm. (I set a timer for 6 minutes and came up with 34 post ideas!)

There are fantastic social media ideas in your brain – you just need to get them out! Sitting down and letting ideas flow freely (without second-guessing or shooting them down) is key to always having a list of content topics.

There are many ways to brainstorm, so try a few to see what works for you.

I like to start with 3-5 broad categories and then develop potential ideas for each one. It helps me focus my thoughts, so I'm not scattered. Focus on quantity over quality. Get the ideas out, and then edit them later.

4. Keep a folder on your phone to jot down inspiration.

You never know when inspiration may strike! Creating a place to put all of your ideas when they come to you gives you back-up when you need a boost.

5. Repurpose old content.

Look back on posts that have been popular in the past. Can you expand on that topic? Take a different viewpoint on it or create posts on related ideas?

6. Share content your community has created.

Share content from other industry professionals, local businesses, or charitable organizations you support. It helps you create less content, is helpful for your audience, and can encourage other companies to, in turn, share your posts.

7. Team up with other businesses

Consider a brainstorming buddy. Bouncing ideas off someone else can help you go in directions you may not have thought of.

Social Media Ideas to Get You Started

  • Add a bit of fun to their lives with a game or a meme
  • Tap into what is happening in the world
  • Ask for advice
  • Share helpful or fun resources (books, apps, movies)
  • Share a win or a lesson you learned
  • Run a contest
  • Do a round-up post of your favourites
  • Create a weekly series – focus content on one specific area so you can go in-depth without overwhelming
  • Host an ask me anything day
  • Spotlight your clients
  • Showcase a local business or charity
  • Interview someone
  • Poll your audience
  • Answer client or follower questions

There are a never-ending number of topics you can use to create social media content. But we all hit blocks sometimes – push through, keep plugging away, and the ideas will start flowing!

And if you are ready to pass off your social media, we can help with that

Save Time by Delegating Tasks to a Virtual Assistant. As a small business owner, there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done! Your time is precious, and not all tasks are created equally. Say goodbye to these top 6 time wasters for entrepreneurs so that you can focus on the most critical areas of your business. 6 Biggest Time Wasters for Entrepreneurs: 1. Meetings. Whether you meet with clients, vendors or employees, prioritize and respect your time. Does it need to be a full meeting, or would a quick call or email do the trick? Look for other, easier ways to communicate. And if you need a face-to-face or virtual meeting, set a boundary beforehand as to how much time you have to dedicate. 2. Online Distractions. Getting swept up in social media, checking your email, or reading texts can be a big distraction and time waster. Setting times to sort through your emails and messages can help you focus on the task at hand. 3. Routine and Repetitive Tasks. Not all tasks are created equally. What jobs can only YOU do in your business, and which tasks can you delegate? Try keeping a list for a week or two, jotting down all the things you do in a day, then look it over and see what tasks are eating up your time that could be passed off. 4. Outdated Tools. Using the right tool for the job can save you time and energy. A few of our favourite tools are Calendly and Acuity for scheduling meetings, Dubsado for customer management, and Mailchimp for email marketing. 5. Lack of Strategy and Systems. Does it feel like you’re spinning your wheels and not making any progress? Creating a strategy for growth with measurable goals will help create a clear direction in your business. While systems and routines help you make the most of your time by ensuring you are as efficient and productive as possible. 6. Overthinking and Second Guessing. One of our biggest time wasters as entrepreneurs (and a significant factor in holding ourselves back!) is second-guessing our actions, overthinking, and not taking chances. Once you’ve done the research, don’t be afraid to jump in! Second-guessing yourself, your choices, and your abilities will only you back. How a Virtual Assistant Can Help Save You Time Take on the repetitive tasks that consume your time and take you away from the work only YOU can do. Set you up with systems and strategies to help run your business as efficiently and effectively as possible. Introduce you to tools and new technologies to help make your life easier. Run interference with clients and vendors, so you only take on the necessary meetings and calls. You didn't become an entrepreneur to work 24/7 – be sure you aren't giving more of your time to your business than you need to. Say no to some of these big time wasters and set yourself up for success! Check out a list of what a Virtual Assistant can do for you!
