How to Write Email Newsletters Your Readers Will Open, Read, and Love

Alyson Scott • Oct 01, 2021

Wondering how to write email newsletters your list will love? Email marketing is alive and well!

On average, every $1 spent on email marketing makes $42 (that’s a 4200% return on investment).

To make it work, you need to send awesome emails!

How to Write Email Newsletters Your Subscribers Want to Read

1. Have a goal.

What do you want your subscribers to do when they read this email? Buy a product, check out your blog post, sign up for a course or free webinar?

It's always a good idea to start with the end in mind – if you know you have a particular product you want to draw attention to or will be launching a new offer, talking up the problems it will solve in an email is a great place to start.

Every email you send should have a purpose and be part of a cohesive content marketing strategy.

2. Discuss content relevant to your readers.

Be sure to keep your topics relevant to your readers – they signed up for a specific reason, so follow through and continuously provide value on subjects of interest to them.

3. Craft a hook with a catchy subject line.

What will make readers stand up and pay attention? Why will they open your email and read it? Your hook should pique interest and pose an obvious benefit for your audience.

4. Keep readers interested with a compelling opening line.

Now that you have piqued interest in the headline be sure to follow through and get to the good stuff right away. You can see the opening sentence below the subject line on many devices, so starting strong gives another reason for your audience to open that email.

5. Layout matters.

Large blocks of text with no breaks or images are no fun to read! Use bold text, italics, and colour to draw attention to the essential points.

6. Give value.

You need to give your readers a reason to read your emails. Give value in the form of tips, insights, discounts, or extra freebies that they won’t get anywhere else.

7. Have a call to action.

A call to action doesn't have to ask for the sale – it could also be read the blog, get this free download, or join a free webinar.

8. Look to the future.

If you continuously craft engaging email newsletters that entertain, teach, or inspire, your readers will be more likely to open them in the future. If every email is a sales pitch, they will learn to tune you out.

 9. Aim for connection.

How can you make a personal connection? Do you have shared interests, goals, pain points? Keep things conversational and casual (within the tone of your brand).

10. Be Short. Concise. And to the point.

Stick to one topic and don’t overwhelm with too much information. Trying to include a little bit of everything weakens your message and buries the best stuff!

11. Be consistent and keep your promises.

If you said a weekly newsletter, keep it weekly. Don’t bombard your subscriber’s inboxes!

12. Use images or video.

Pictures, infographics, and videos make your content easier to absorb and keep things visually attractive.

Email marketing is an excellent way to create a community around your brand. Learning how to write email newsletters that make connections, provide value, and solve problems helps you build trust and develop relationships with potential clients. Done well, you can show the value of your products and services in a way that piques interest and lets readers know what they will gain by working with you.

Save Time by Delegating Tasks to a Virtual Assistant. As a small business owner, there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done! Your time is precious, and not all tasks are created equally. Say goodbye to these top 6 time wasters for entrepreneurs so that you can focus on the most critical areas of your business. 6 Biggest Time Wasters for Entrepreneurs: 1. Meetings. Whether you meet with clients, vendors or employees, prioritize and respect your time. Does it need to be a full meeting, or would a quick call or email do the trick? Look for other, easier ways to communicate. And if you need a face-to-face or virtual meeting, set a boundary beforehand as to how much time you have to dedicate. 2. Online Distractions. Getting swept up in social media, checking your email, or reading texts can be a big distraction and time waster. Setting times to sort through your emails and messages can help you focus on the task at hand. 3. Routine and Repetitive Tasks. Not all tasks are created equally. What jobs can only YOU do in your business, and which tasks can you delegate? Try keeping a list for a week or two, jotting down all the things you do in a day, then look it over and see what tasks are eating up your time that could be passed off. 4. Outdated Tools. Using the right tool for the job can save you time and energy. A few of our favourite tools are Calendly and Acuity for scheduling meetings, Dubsado for customer management, and Mailchimp for email marketing. 5. Lack of Strategy and Systems. Does it feel like you’re spinning your wheels and not making any progress? Creating a strategy for growth with measurable goals will help create a clear direction in your business. While systems and routines help you make the most of your time by ensuring you are as efficient and productive as possible. 6. Overthinking and Second Guessing. One of our biggest time wasters as entrepreneurs (and a significant factor in holding ourselves back!) is second-guessing our actions, overthinking, and not taking chances. Once you’ve done the research, don’t be afraid to jump in! Second-guessing yourself, your choices, and your abilities will only you back. How a Virtual Assistant Can Help Save You Time Take on the repetitive tasks that consume your time and take you away from the work only YOU can do. Set you up with systems and strategies to help run your business as efficiently and effectively as possible. Introduce you to tools and new technologies to help make your life easier. Run interference with clients and vendors, so you only take on the necessary meetings and calls. You didn't become an entrepreneur to work 24/7 – be sure you aren't giving more of your time to your business than you need to. Say no to some of these big time wasters and set yourself up for success! Check out a list of what a Virtual Assistant can do for you!
